Society Protocol Season 3 14
Day of Resurrection
Mi-hee, who had taken off her blue helmet and lived in hiding with others, was hiding with her mother in a nearly dilapidated, empty house deep in the woods.
Although she had prepared small amounts of food in her backpack, it was not enough to sustain a proper meal.
Mi-hee was filling two 1.5-liter plastic bottles with rice and packing them into her backpack.
Inside the backpack were curry powder, chili powder, and seasonings to flavor the broth.
There were vegetables, including potatoes, as well as dried and marinated meat and braised beef, but
she had dropped the bags she was holding while being swept away by the crowd.
Now, there was no way to contact others. And she had no desire to contact them either.
This was because they, too, had been harmed by insects and birds.
And she could not run far away.
The city had already been destroyed, and she thought that if people found out her identity, they would harm her.
Right now, all that remained in Mi-hee's backpack were a pot, a few plastic bowls, spoons and chopsticks, rice, and seasonings. Mi-hee's mother had spent her childhood in the countryside, so she knew a fair amount about wild greens.
She thought that if she wandered the mountains to find and forage for them to eat, it would at least be better.
Mi-hee gathered branches to start a fire and assembled nearby stones to build a brazier.
So, she cooked rice first. The rice cooked with branches smelled a bit burnt, but it was edible enough.
She scraped the rice clean and transferred it into a plastic bowl, then added water to the pot and made curry.
It was curry with absolutely no ingredients.
Mi-hee dissolved a little chili powder and some seasoning to enhance the flavor of the broth. The curry turned a deep brown.
If her mother had picked a few greens and brought them home, she could have put them in the pot to boil together or mixed them in to eat, making it at least somewhat palatable.
Seeing her mother walking in the distance, Mi-hee waved her hand.
However, her mother was limping. Startled, Mi-hee ran toward her mother.
“Mom, what’s wrong?”
“There were some wild strawberries, so I was thinking of picking them, but there was a snake there.”
Even in that moment, Mi-hee’s mother smiled, worried that her daughter might be concerned.
She had dirt on her body, presumably having fallen in shock.
“Still, we gathered a few greens, so let’s try eating this. There were mushrooms too. I didn’t pick them all because I planned to eat them later. Maybe I should have just picked them all.”
Mi-hee thought her mother’s foot looked more serious than it appeared. She applied a splint and tore up some clothes to wrap around it like a bandage.
Still, she had to eat, so she washed the greens under running water and put them into the curry.
Then she added some slightly cooled rice to the mix and stirred it all together.
Having settled for one meal like that, she was able to stave off hunger for the time being.
However, she knew she couldn’t live like this forever.
“There must still be some food left at the prayer retreat, right?”
“There’s rice in the basement, and meat and canned goods in the refrigerator. There should be some noodles too. But why? Don’t even think about it. Who knows what might happen to you.”
Although they had walked for quite a while from the prayer retreat and rested their legs at a dilapidated house that looked like it had been inhabited by slash-and-burn farmers,
it wasn’t that far away.
Since they had simply changed direction while coming down the mountain path, it seemed they would be able to find it.
“Mom, I’m going to the prayer retreat.”
She wanted to carry her mother on her back, but she didn’t have the strength for that. And since it was a distance that could be covered in half a day, she couldn’t even imagine bringing back food and her mother.
Mi-hee’s mother felt the same way.
She felt she couldn’t hold out for a few more days like this.
“Oh, if only my leg hadn’t been injured.”
This was not the time to be picky about such things. They had to survive somehow. Worried that her mother might be cold, Mi-hee lit a bonfire and spread a plastic sheet in front of it for her to warm.
Mi-hee's mother was wrapped in the plastic and warming herself by the fire.
Mi-hee slung her backpack over her shoulder and began walking toward the prayer retreat.
The Million Salvationists, now numbering fewer than 10,000 worldwide, realized that all their attacks had been in vain.
They understood that even the hope of being one of a million to be saved had vanished.
Most believers around the world had abandoned their weapons and scattered in all directions into the forests and seas.
However, the United States and Europe remained. Europe had its headquarters in France.
Because former mercenaries were cooperating, they possessed radar and surface-to-air missiles.
The United States had not yet been able to properly utilize the aircraft they had created by modifying pesticide sprayers.
“The snakes are regaining air superiority. If things continue like this, it is only a matter of time before we are annihilated.”
Jackson listened silently to Colonel James’s words.
They had failed. That was the reality. Now they would be captured by humans, nailed to the cross, and burned in the fire.
The image of Jesus crucified came to mind, and Jackson imagined that face transforming into his own.
“We still have 12 fighter jets left.”
That is what Jackson called the light pesticide sprayers equipped with EMP devices.
In Europe, too, they were simultaneously resolving to launch a final counterattack.
The operation name was "Day of Resurrection."
Coincidentally, the day the operation began was also the third day after the disaster had ended.
While Jesus became the symbol of Christianity partly because he was crucified and executed,
the most important reason was that he resurrected three days after his death.
They were not dead yet. They believed this was all God's will.
Now, they had abandoned the very notion that they would be saved and become the only humans remaining on Earth.
There was no longer any glory to enjoy while alive.
They would all praise God's will and die in God's name.
Jackson personally boarded the Angel's Wings No. 1. His goal was not to kill ordinary humans, but to kill the snake himself.
The snake was not that far away.
This was because Seattle was relatively closer than other places in the United States.
Angel's Wings No. 1 was not a standard pesticide-spraying aircraft. It was a private plane.
It could fly for up to about 12 hours without significantly increasing its speed.
He did not know if he would be able to return. He would have to reduce the weight of the plane as much as possible.
He carried the pilot in charge of the controls and a few soldiers capable of using guns.
He would obliterate the enemy base and personally wage a small-scale ground battle.
Jackson delivered his final message and boarded the plane.
“Maktub Abracadabra.”
The message was as follows. It had already been recorded as God's will. It shall be done according to the word.
At first, the believers followed God's will to survive,
but now they pledged to dedicate themselves to God.
An angel who had returned to Earth was sitting on the wing of their plane.
In the final attack, an EMP was fired. EMP bombs were also dropped.
All the fighter jets were neutralized. The electricity began to go out again.
Construction equipment rebuilding the roads also stopped. But that was all.
It failed to inflict direct damage on the people.
Using the DS base information obtained from Watchdog 3, Jackson and his group activated the EMP and the resonant frequency generator.
The tower, which had barely been standing, collapsed. However, there was no one there anymore.
Jackson ordered the plane to land on a cleared, empty downtown street.
Then, he got out of the plane, grabbed his gun, and started running.
There was no one on the street. A tent near the DS base came into view. Jackson pulled out his machine gun without hesitation and fired at the tent. He ran out of bullets.
There was no trace of anyone inside.
Just then, the Chief from Seattle came out and began shooting at the believers holding their guns.
They hit the heads accurately. But he, too, ran out of bullets.
Now they began rushing toward Pastor Jackson. Jackson jumped in as well.
They exchanged punches.
The most important person inside the tent watched the scene. He whistled as if he were enjoying it.
It was then. An angel appeared, uprooted the fallen broadcasting station tower, and blew it away.
The most important person was startled for a moment, drew all his energy to lift the debris of the collapsed walls, and blocked the tower. The tower hit the cement wall and deflected. It grazed the serpent's flank.
“I am not someone of your level to be defeated. Go and summon God.”
The angel, enraged, attempted to kill the serpent.
It was then that the serpent soared into the air and spewed out a red aura.
At this, the angel writhed in agony. Then, he quickly fled the scene.
Jackson watched the angel leave while engaging in hand-to-hand combat with the Seattle commander.
Now, all hope was gone. He thought only of dying with his enemy.
“You go with me.”
Jackson pulled the safety pin from an EMP grenade in his pocket.
Then he rushed toward the Seattle commander and embraced him.
The EMP itself did not directly harm humans.
However, because the explosive force at the moment the EMP occurred was immense, both of their bodies eventually exploded.
The serpent was focused on the angel and could not protect its most precious son from suffering.
The smile vanished from the serpent's face. It no longer whistled.
“Still, I do not give up. No matter how wildly God rages, I do not abandon humanity.”
The snake stroked its offspring’s face, which still retained some warmth, for a moment, then went inside the tent.
“The most important task remains. We must hurry with the rocket launch. Get ready quickly.”
It was a rocket that was expected to launch only after a considerable amount of time had passed.
However, the situation had changed too much. They had to prepare immediately.
This was because what had been done so far was less than a quarter of what lay ahead.
At that moment, Min-hyuk realized that everything was over.
The war was over now. Therefore, he had to find Mi-hee. People might harm Mihee.
Ji Seo-hoon had made a promise to himself.
He would admit that although he could not eliminate the Alpha, he had attempted to do so.
He had to go rescue Mi-hee. Min-hyuk stepped out of the trailer.
Only the remains of animals and insects remained in the deserted base. There were no traces of survivors.
Min-hyuk walked toward the hangar.
There stood an airplane hidden there to avoid an EMP attack.
It was not a standard fighter jet.
Min-hyuk entered the pilot's waiting room next to the hangar.
He found the manual and read it.
He was one who had eaten the fruit of knowledge.
It was not a standard fighter jet, but the Organization's state-of-the-art aircraft.
It was a small passenger plane capable of taking off and landing on its own, almost like a driverless car, once it set its own target.
They had already set up the final method to abandon the country and escape.
Min-hyuk checked the plane's fuel.
Then he started the engine.
The plane's engine turned on and it began to move slowly.
The plane began to slide down the runway, covered in the carcasses of insects. Still, there was nothing he could do.
Min-hyuk turned off the autopilot and manually increased the engine's power output. Then, after increasing the speed, he pulled the lever.
The airplane wobbled and soared into the sky.
Once Min-hyuk was up in the air, he read the manual and made a discovery.
Since the airplane was capable of vertical takeoff and landing, there was no need to perform such a dangerous takeoff.
